Mr. Dassler has recently accepted one of 15 Fisher Fellowships with the KIPP Foundation, a national network of 57 independently run public schools in 17 states. Following the fellowship year, Mr. Dassler will be the founding school leader/principal of a KIPP high school in New Orleans, LA.
For the past five years, Mr. Dassler taught ninth grade English as well as seniors at Stranahan High School in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. His seniors were in the school’s Urban Teacher Academy Program – an innovative K=12/higher education partnership that recruits and prepares high school students for careers in urban schools. Mr. Dassler also served as senior class sponsor, advisor to the National Honor Society, and coordinator of the $1 million federal small learning communities/high school reform grant.
A member of Class XXIII of Leadership Florida, Mr. Dassler also served as a member of the Florida Humanities Council and the Reubin O’D Askew Institute on Politics and Society. He has served on the State Advisory Committee for the Education of Exceptional Students, the Old Dillard Foundation where he was vice president, the Florida PTA Board of Directors, and the Postsecondary Education Planning Commission of Florida.
A graduate of the University of Florida, Mr. Dassler earned a bachelor’s degree in English and master’s degree in education. He became the youngest person ever to be recognized as Broward County Teacher of the Year when he was selected from among 17,000 teachers in 2006.
