Joel Embry is Sr. Vice-President of CNL Real Estate and Development Corp. and Director of Community Development for the company. He is based in the Tallahassee, Florida office of CNL and directs the company’s real estate development activities in North Florida.
Mr. Embry is founder of Amelia Park in Fernandina Beach on Amelia Island, Florida. Amelia Park is a 110-acre walkable, mixed-use neighborhood designed by Duany Plater-Zyberk. Its master plan encompasses a 70,000 square foot town center with shops, offices, lodging and residences; neighborhood YMCA; Montessori school; recreational facilities and parks; and a diversity of housing types and prices. The neighborhood utilizes advanced telecommunications strategies that encompass a community intranet, telework, distance learning, telemedicine and aging-in-place strategies.
Based on experience at Amelia Park, Mr. Embry has provided community development services and facilitation to property owners, developers and communities that wish to participate in the growing application of the principles of New Urbanism in the U.S. In addition to developing Amelia Park, he was engaged by the Arnold Fund of Covington, GA to develop Clark’s Grove, a 95-acre Traditional Neighborhood Development, and by Powerhouse, Inc. to coordinate the planning of approximately 2,000 acres of Welaunee Plantation in Tallahassee. In 2006, Embry was instrumental in arranging the sale of land at Welaunee to CNL.
Mr. Embry is active in public policy discussions relating to community building patterns and quality of life. He is a graduate of Florida State University, serves as Director of 1000 Friends of Florida and was Founding Chairman of the Leadership Florida Institute. He is a director of the National Town Builders Association, Full Member of Urban Land Institute, and a member of the Congress for the New Urbanism.
